Netflix said if I was in for a scare, I should watch Dream House. Even IMDB’s synopsis implies horror: “Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.” Sounds familiar, right?
The Pros
- This is not the stereotypical haunted family movie.
- Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Weisz
- Punk youths in the basement
- Plot twists!
However…
This is not horror, nor is it scary. It’s a psychological thriller. While I am disappointed, since I sat down to watch horror, it would be unfair to grade it as such. I liked the psychological dilemma of the story, though it took a little long to resolve (even though the movie is only 90 minutes long). The main problem is that while the hints are buried for the big reveal, I don’t really care about the big reveal. Instead, I’m sad for Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz. I even teared up.
Verdict: Not Horror (Watch at Your Own Risk)
Have you ever been bamboozled by a misleading synopsis?
