So a quick image search revealed that it was not aliens, but that doesn’t negate my initial response of awe and repulsion.

This fungus looks more like a severed finger. Mine look like…something else. The stinkhorn fungus releases a carrion scent out its tip (yes, folks, I know) that attracts flies. These flies then carry the spores. The stinkhorn is not harmful to your plants, and it’s not known to be poisonous. Most people just don’t want to eat them, unless maybe you have some Freudian issues.
